Now, spell-check birth papers

With complaints pouring in that spelling mistakes have been detected in a large number of birth certificates.

Hyderabad: With complaints pouring in that spelling mistakes have been detected in a large number of birth certificates during the digitisation process, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has decided to offer “one-time spelling correction” facility in birth and death certificates.

Cutting across party lines, the elected body of corporators led by Mayor Majid Hussain on Saturday unanimously approved a resolution in the general body meeting to offer one-time correction facility as it would help thousands of youngsters to take up their professional career abroad.

Rein Bazaar corporator Khaja Bilal Ahmed of the MIM brought to the notice of the house that due to spelling mistakes in birth certificates, youngsters were not able to obtain a passport which is necessary to get employment.

“If we can give them an opportunity to get the spelling mistakes corrected, they will get passports and can go abroad to work or even pursue higher studies,” he said.

Ahmed also said that hundreds of youngsters were running from pillar to post in GHMC offices to get spelling mistakes corrected but it has not been done even three months later.

“By paying Rs 2,000 to Rs 4,000 to agents (touts), the spelling mistakes are being corrected in a short span of time. It will be better if the GHMC offers one-time correction facility from its side,” Ahmed said.

The issue was raised by TD corporator M. Venkata Ramana who found fault with GHMC officials for allowing Mee Seva to issue birth and death certificates.

He was supported by former mayor Banda Kartika Reddy of the Congress and TD floor leader Singireddy Srinivas who demanded withdrawal of powers from Mee Seva to issue these certificates.

On the demand of the corporators, the Mayor gave a ruling asking the commissioner to withdraw the power of issuing birth and death certificates from Mee Seva and confine the authority to GHMC offices and its citizen service centres. The officials were also told to close Mee Seva counters functioning in GHMC CSC centres.
