Jipmer gynaecology candidate gets HC relief

The Madras high court has directed the director, Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education.

Chennai: The Madras high court has directed the director, Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer), Puducherry, to constitute a selection committee to assess application of only one candidate, who applied for the post of assistant professor in the department of obstetrics and gynaecology, afresh.

On a petition from Dr Anandraj, who was not selected for the post, a division bench, comprising justices N. Paul Vasanthakumar and R. Mahadevan, said the department was duty bound to conduct the interview by duly constituting a selection committee with all seriousness.

Petitioner, Dr Anandraj, had completed MD in obstetrics and gynaecology from Jipmer in 2006. Later, he served as assistant professor in other medical institutions. He applied for the post of assistant professor in Jipmer and appeared for an interview on January 20, 2011.

He was not selected. Dr Anandraj contended that he was the only candidate who had applied for the post reserved for SCs and appeared for the interview. He filed a petition before CAT, which dismissed it. Hence, he moved the high court.

Conducting an interview in a casual manner without showing seriousness is not expected of the interview committee, the bench said. While finding fault with regard to the constitution of the standing selection committee, the bench said the selection of the petitioner be re-assessed by duly constituting a committee. It also directed the ministry of health and family welfare to pass fresh orders within a period of eight weeks.
