Gang rivalry: Goons throw bombs at flat
Kochi: Two suspected goons on a motorbike threw two bombs at an apartment complex near Deshabhimani Junction in Kochi on Saturday night in what seems to be a follow-up of the clash between the gangs of Bhai Nazeer and Maradu Aneesh on the verandah of Ernakulam Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate on Friday. Fortunately, no one was injured in the bombing, but a car was damaged.
According to police, two unidentified men, wearing helmets, stopped in front of the Revathy Court Apartment on Kollamparambil Lane near Deshabhimani Junction and threw two bombs towards the apartment.
The sound of the explosion was so loud that people came out of their houses in surprise. But the men on the bike fled the scene immediately. A person standing near the apartment saw them but he could not give any clues to the police as the men were wearing helmets. He also failed to notice the registration number of the bike.
A group of men, who are understood to be the aides of the notorious goon Bhai Nazeer, were assembled at an apartment to go for a wedding party. The flat was owned by one Rajesh. Firoz Khan, the elder brother of Imthiaz Khan who was killed by Maradu Aneesh’s gang last year, also came to this flat after the incident, indicating that goon rivalry was behind the bombing.
“Prima facie, the bombs were home-made and were the size of a cricket ball. The two men on the bike threw one bomb at the flat, while the other one fell on the side of the road. The car’s windshield shattered in the explosion. A pipeline also burst because of the impact,” said D.S. Suneesh Babu, the assistant commissioner of Ernakulam central police who leads the investigation.
A police team consisting of top officials, dog squad and forensic squad arrived at the scene late on Saturday night and gathered evidence. The cops are also interrogating the apartment inmates to collect details. The police said more details about the incident would be revealed after the interrogations.
