Officials eye litter-free temple
Vijayawada: The Kanakadurga temple authorities on Friday revealed plans to ensure that the surroundings of the temple are litter-free zone even as they prepare for the conclusion of Bhavani deekshas to begin from December 23.
The officials’ decision is part of their preparations to receive lakhs of devotees for the Bhavani deeksha that ends on December 27.
Temple in-charge executive office V. Trinatha Rao told this newspaper that signboards would be put up at the temple premises, to dissuade devotees from spitting and littering.
Rao revealed plans of a special campaign through the public address system constantly reminding the devotees not to litter the surroundings of the temple.
“This campaign would also be extended at the bathing ghats and at the queue complexes,” the EO said. Additional sanitary staff would be appointed during Bhavani deeksha conclusion to maintain cleanliness round the clock, he added.
As there is no accommodation for devotees visiting the temple, a majority of them are forced to sleep in the open near the temple premises during night time.
“This has been resulting in the temple surroundings getting unhygienic with litter being strewn all around. Though the sanitary employees work round the clock, they are unable to prevent the people from littering and spitting on the roads. Additional staff will help maintain cleanliness,” Rao said.
District collector M. Raghunandana Rao had conducted a review meeting recently and directed the municipal officials to appoint more sanitary staff to maintain cleanliness on the roads as the Bhavanis go round Indrakeeladri as part of Giri Pradakshina before concluding their deeksha at the temple.
