Family mistakes girl to be dead, blame doctors
Bangalore: There was tension at Fortis Hospital in Seshadripuram when the parents of 16-year-old girl alleged that their daughter had died due to medical negligence. However, the girl has been comatose since she had been brought in on Thursday, and the doctors had not declared her dead.
Police said miscommunication between the doctors and the girl’s family led to the confusion.
Dr Shankar, a physician at Fortis Hospital, said, “Around 2.45 pm on Thursday, Rohini was brought to our hospital in Seshadripuram by her mother and neighbour.
She also had enlarged lymph nodes for the last three days, for which she had been treated elsewhere. She was brought to the hospital with generalised tonic clonic seizures (GTCS), frothing in the mouth, and rolling of the eyes in an unconsciousness state. On examination, the patient was found deeply comatose; pupils were unequal and she seemed to be having continuous seizures.
Since the patient showed signs of severe respiratory acidosis, she was immediately incubated and ventilated. The first CT scan report showed cerebral edema and a hypodense lesion in the left cerebellar area.”
“The patient’s condition was explained to her relatives and appropriate treatment was started in consultation with the doctor. The patient’s grave condition was explained and consent taken for the treatment. A neurologist’s opinion was also taken and as of Friday, the treatment was started but the patient continued to remain in an unconscious state,” Dr Shankar added.
The Seshadripuram police said no case had been registered. “This is a simple matter of miscommunication. The girl’s parents and family were unable to comprehend the medical terminology used by the doctors, which made them wrongly believe their daughter was dead. They have not approached us to file a complaint yet, but we are keeping an eye on the situation,” said the police.
