Chennai: It’s a novel way to smuggle gold into the country: Sleuths from the DirectÂorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), ChenÂnai, caught two men carrying 5 kg of henna powder in which 1.8 kg of gold powder worth over Rs 60 lakh was mixed.
The DRI team had intercepted two passengers, hailing from Ramanathapuram, when they landed in Chennai from Dubai on Wednesday.
The DRI team came upon five tins of henna powder. When they asked them why they were carrying such a large quantity of this with them in the bag, the two said that they were transporting the special powder in view of the festive season ahead.
Not convinced by the answer, the officials decided to send a sample of the powder to a lab. On Thursday, the lab result showed that the henna powder was mixed with gold powder, DRI sources said.
Customs and DRI officials said that they had not, in recent history, come across a case in which smugglers had mixed henna powder with gold powder to smuggle into the country.
The DRI official added that the two, booked for smuggling gold, were mere carriers. They were now on the look out for bigger names in the racket.
