Wake-up call for top babus

In Karnataka, on an average it takes a week to clear a file.

Bangalore: After constituting a cabinet sub-committee on bringing reforms in the state secretariat, the state government has moved a step forward.

The trigger? When the new government assumed charge, the total number of pending files in the secretariat was 2.62 lakh.

Now, close to 1.25 lakh files have been cleared with the number of files still pending for more than a year at 1.22 lakh.

On Thursday, the state cabinet decided to ‘pull up’ secretaries of various departments who had 50 percent of files pending in their departments.

Briefing reporters after the cabinet meeting, law and parliamentary affairs minister, T.B. Jayachandra said the government had decided to issue notices to all secretaries who have kept pending over 50 per cent files.

Ministers too will be held responsible for any delay, he said.

The departments which got the thumbs up for speedy clearance include Animal Husbandry - 45, Commerce and Industry - 49.08, Energy - 39.77, Primary and Secondary Education - 49, Finance - 36.2, Youth Services - 40.5, Medical Education - 32.76, PWD - 44.15, Revenue - 46.68, Urban Development - 45.23, Infrastructure -40.19, Forest - 31.31.
