Students protest Indian envoy’s arrest in the US

Carrying banners, placards and flags of their respective parties, protesters raise anti-US slogans.

Hyderabad: A large number of students affiliated to various organisation and Left parties protested near the US consulate in Begumpet on Thursday against the ill-treatment meted out to Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade by the US authorities in New York.

Carrying banners, placards and flags of their respective parties, the protestors raised anti-US slogans. Tension prevailed in the busy Begumpet area as police stopped dozens of protestors who tried to march towards the Paiga Palace, which houses the consulate.

Police officials, who had erected barricades on the road leading to the consulate, arrested the protestors as a preventive measure.

The protestors demanded an apology from the US. “India should act firmly without thinking of the impact on trade and business relations with the US because the country’s honour and pride are more important,” said one of the protesters.

Begumpet inspector B. Srihari, said, “More cops have been deployed and the area is under constant vigil.”
