Nauvari saree-clad grandmother wins marathon running barefoot, stuns athletes
Baramati(Maharashtra): Latha Bhagwan, the 61-year-old grandmother took athletes by surprise by winning the 3 km race at Baramati marathon.
A farm labourer by profession, Lata participated in the marathon along with 9500 other people. The granny won in the senior citizen’s category and walked away with a cash prize of Rs 5000 along with a certificate.
Lata clad in a traditional Maharashtrian nauvari saree, stunned other participants when she ran barefoot in the marathon.
Speaking about her victory, Lata said, "I used to go for morning walks daily, but I had never run. If I had even tried to run, people would have found it strange and they would have asked me uncomfortable questions."
The grand mother said she felt quite awkward when she started running in saree among other participants, but “when the race began and I started overtaking them one by one, I gained my energy."
A native of Buldhana village, Lata Bhagwan is a migrated labourer in Baramati, Maharashtra.
