Chennai: Amidst complaints that four out of 10 auto rickshaws in the city are not using meters, city police has decided to set 100 police assistance booths at important transit points including the Central railway station, GH, high court and IIT.

Booths will be opened mainly at transit hubs and commercial hubs in the city, will record registration details of the vehicle and drivers based on complaints from the commuters and will relay it to the control room which will pass it on to the transport department to impose a fine on the defaulting driver.
A senior police officer said that 65 per cent of the auto drivers comply with the new tariff for auto meters, as per a study conducted by the department.
On Wednesday alone, city police impounded 180 autos for violations, including not using the meter and collecting exorbitant fares, of which 155 autos were impounded in the drive carried out in Mylapore, Kilpauk, Adyar, T Nagar, and Triplicane and 25 more in Flower Bazaar, Pulianthope, and Anna Nagar.
In addition, 1,342 cases were booked against auto drivers for violations.
Police have made arrangements to monitor the behaviour of auto drivers through surveillance cameras installed at crowded junctions and in sensitive pockets.
