Be good for goodness' sake
With the onset of Christmas, Bangaloreans are doing everything they can to get on Santa's good side, either by spending a day or two with the underprivileged or by donating basic requirements to them.
“In our colony, we, along with our kids, generally get together for potluck or such things. This year, we took our kids to an orphanage, so that they learn the art of giving at a young age," says Monica Vardya, who has been visiting Living Hope, a children's home for two years.
Families, friends, students and regular volunteers like to go out of their way especially for Christmas. Surabhi MC, a student at Mount Carmel College and member of the Rotaract Club, says “We decided to compile a library for orphan kids, who are often deprived of books other than those."
Surely books can be the best gifts, but a happy meal can also add smiles to the picture. “I'm part of this platform called I Volunteer, so I know the requirements of any particular place I go to. Also we have caterers cook a special dish for the kids," says Shirshank Bhattacharya.
Shyamli, who is normally involved in helping out children of her domestic help, goes to different children's homes every year.
“I teach them prayers and hymns, because that is what will stay in their minds for a long time," she says.
It's not just prayers though. A few people are trying to keep in vogue certain art forms like puppet shows and story telling by teaching little children.
Rajesh P Menon, co-founder of Khushiyan, an online platform that connects helping hands, says, “We had an event five days ago, where we went to Adwaya, a children's home, and had a puppet show and slippers for all the kids, just basic requirements. On Christmas day, I'm going to be spending the day at another orphanage, and distribute chocolates and perhaps get someone to dress up like Santa."
Pooja Kumawat, who also spent a day at Adwaya, says, “I enjoy with kids because they are happy with the smallest things, and always enthu and energetic. Bringing a smile on somebody's face is so satisfactory, especially when you know its because of you. It's the greatest gift when I can make anybody smile."
