World awaits good news on Tanzanian twins
Ericana and Eluidi are conjoined twins joined at the buttocks.
Chennai: It could well be celebration time for Team Apollo and the brave Tanzanian mom.
Her twin boys Ericana and Eluidi appear to be on the road to recovery after the ‘liberation’ from the ‘imprisonment’ of being ischiopygopagusly conjoined.
Apollo’s senior paediatric urologist Dr Venkata Sripathi had led the team of multi-specialty surgeons who separated the nine-month-olds in a marathon 18-hour surgery on Monday.
Dr Sripathi will also lead the media presentation on Thursday to most likely announce the success of the separation surgery.
That there could be good news for the world from the doctor team is indicated by the presence of the kids’ mother Grace Mwakyusa who has been praying hard ever since Apollo fixed the surgery date sometime back.
She had come allthe way from a remote village in Tanzania seeking a medical miracle after the doctors in her country gave up on this hugely complicated case of pygopagus conjoined twins—joined at the buttocks.
A paediatric and neonatal surgeon from London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital, Dr Edward Kiely, will also be at the media briefing. He would “share the details of the complexities of the surgery, the current status of the two babies and the future of action”, said Apollo Hospitals in a statement, adding that its chairman Dr Prathap C Reddy and also the Tanzanian health attaché Dr Khery Goloka will also be present.
