Hyderabad: Three choppers have been put at the disposal of President Pranab Mukherjee, who is arriving in the city on Thursday. The helipads at EME Centre near Rashtrapathi Nilay-am, Begumpet Airport and Hakimpet Airport are being kept ready.
The President will arrive at Hakimpet airport on Thursday and will take the road to the Rashtrapathi Nilayam at Bollarum.
The original plan was for the President to land at the Begumpet airport and so the civic authorities have been busy repairing roads from Begumpet airport to Rashtrapathi Nilayam. However, it was later decided that the President will land at Hakimpet IAF station.
The President will not have any meetings on Thursday. The following day, December 20, he will leave for Chennai from Hakimpet airport. He will also be visiting Kerala.
On December 23 he will come back to Secunderabad and take part in the centenary celebrations of former president Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy, and will host a dinner at the Raj Bhavan on December 24.
However, G.V. Rao, general secretary of the Great Alwal Allied Service Association, said that people living near Rashtrapathi Nilayam face serious trouble whenever the President visits.
particularly now that the population of Alwal circle is around 2.5 lakh.
“Defence has recently closed several roads in the area and only the road from Alwal to Yapral is functional. With the President coming even from Hakimpet we have trouble at Bollarum. All the roads are closed during his journey in the city and there are curbs during his stay.”
J. Dorai Raj of Saraswatinagar in Lothukunta said that he is “glad to know that the President is coming to Hyderabad and will stay in Rashtrapati Nilayam, Bollarum because the roads from Begumpet to Bollarum, via Secunderabad Club, Kharkana, Trimulgherry, Lal Bazar, Lothukunta are nicely laid, potholes have been filled, ditches covered, wires and cables hanging from poles removed, street lights are working.
“But my happiness is short-lived. The moment the last car of the convoy leaves Begumpet, the wear and tear begins. By February the holes and ditches will reappear, and by June it becomes bad and in the rainy season it becomes worse. Next December the whole process starts again.”
Rashtrapati Nilayam is one of the two official retreats of the President of India, the other being in Shimla. The President’s winter sojourn will end on December 31.
