100 hi-end speed radars to scan Kerala state highways

Kerala police install 100 high resolution speed surveillance radars at accident-prone stretches.

Thiruvananthapuram: Tightening the grip on speedsters, the police have installed 100 high resolution speed surveillance radars at accident-prone stretches across the state.

The areas include Kovalam –Kollam, MC road, Alappuzha – Changanaserry, Sakthikulangara – Alappuzha, Thrissur – Kuttipuram and Palakkad – Malappuram stretches.

The automated enforcement system installed by Keltron Communications wing at a cost of Rs 40 crore will be commissioned soon.

“The hi-tech speed cameras are installed at 100 spots where many accidents have occurred due to speeding of vehicles,” said IG Headquarters Manoj Abraham.

A centralised control room of the surveillance cameras has been set up at the Police Training College building.

“Compared to the speed radars already installed the new speed radars offer higher visibility as ten megapixel cameras are used,” said Keltron Communication - project manager, S.P. Gopakumar.

The radar units also have inbuilt cameras with back-up facility for 30 days.

The system is fully automated. Vehicles caught in the radar for speeding will be automatically issued a challan.

The fine ranging from Rs 3,00 to Rs 1,000 depending on the gravity of the violation could be paid even online or at designated police stations in each district.
