Screeching trolleys to disappear

The screeching trolleys will not annoy rail travellers at Central station any more if the drive launched.

Chennai: The screeching trolleys will not annoy rail travellers at Central station any more if the drive launched by RPF is something to go by. Responding to complaints from the travelling public, which drew the attention of the general manager of southern railway, RPF personnel on Tuesday seized several worn out and ‘screeching’ trolleys at Chennai Central.

About 15 trolleys were seized since this morning. RPF inspector Alagarasamy said the clearing and forwarding (C&F) agents were instructed over two months back to replace the worn out, screeching trolleys numbering over 200 at Chennai Central alone.

C&F agents own most of the trolleys, he said, adding that they would hand over the trolleys of C&F agents, who do not replace their other worn out ones, to the railway department.

The agents and others owning trolleys have been categorically instructed to replace the metal wheels with normal rubber tyres, which are easy to move and produce no sound, the inspector said, adding that the change would also help ease passenger movement on platforms, where passenger movement is often obstructed by the presence of trolleys and goods placed in front of the luggage-cum-brake van.
