Chennai: The city police chanced upon some high-living thieves who went about their business in the comfort of their cars. It also came in handy to carry home the booty, police found when they held a duo on suspicion on Monday evening.

During initial enquiries, the police found that they were habitual offenders indulging in chain-snatching and thefts across the city for the past three years.

The police were able to recover 90 sovereigns of gold, worth Rs 20 lakh, from the two whose modus operandi was to move around the city in cars and snatch chains.

They bought cars from the theft money.

The accused, Sheik Allaudin, 26, and Amin Sardar, 22, hail from Keelakarai in Ramanathapuram district, and are school dropouts, the police said.

Abdullah was also wanted in theft cases in Keelakarai and had served three months under preventive detention there.

After the duo shifted to Chennai, they became accomplices with Madarsha alias Shahul Hameed along with two others, who were notorious for similar offences, and stayed together at Arumbakkam.
Careful not to raise suspicion among the neighbours, they informed their landlord that they work in a fast food centre and attributed this to their nocturnal activities.

They bought two cars, sold them subsequently and after that went about their ‘business’ on Madarsha’s bike.

They were held by Maduravoyal inspector (crime), Rajendran and his team when they were on patrol near the tollgate on Porur garden service road.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the duo were involved in burglaries reported in and around Koyambedu and have also confessed to have committed chain-snatchings and burglaries in the Tiruvanmiyur, Villivakkkam, and Maduravoyal areas.

A senior police official said, “We are hoping to nab Madarsha and two of his accomplices and this might help solve more property offences in the city.”
