Beware of discount sales and gifts while shopping for Christmas and New Year.

Chennai: Beware of discount sales and gifts while shopping for Christmas and New Year.

The city food safety officials and consumer rights activists have asked consumers to be cautious while buying food and other consumer durables at discount sales. There are chances of expired foodstuff and outdated durable products being passed on to the consumer in the discount and special offer packages.

Explaining the details to be verified on packaged products, city food safety officer S. Lakshmi Narayanan said, “In case of food items, first check for manufacture and expiry dates.

In some shops and malls, food items like biscuits, chocolates are wrapped in a tape that prevents consumers from verifying dates. They should be alert and avoid buying perishable food items in discount sale.”

The food safety officials will conduct surprise checks and pick up samples if poor quality Products are sold to consumers during the festival season.
