Thunderbolt to cover Oommen Chandy in Kannur

Against the backdrop of the Maoist threat and the intelligence report on the possible infiltration.

Kozhikode: Against the backdrop of the Maoist threat and the intelligence report on the possible infiltration of Maoists into the venue of the mass contact programme of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, the police has deployed Thunderbolt commandos at the venue of the mass contact programme to be held in Kannur on Tuesday.

This time, the police is leaving nothing to chance. The LDF protest against the Chief Minister and the failure of the police in providing security to Oommen Chandy during his earlier visit to the district in October, are reasons enough for the elaborate security measures.

The police has virtually sealed off the venue of the mass contact programme and has converted it into a protected zone. Those without identity cards would not be allowed inside, the police said.

In the wake of the Maoist threat, 35 closed circuit television cameras have been installed at the venue and 22 camera crew have also been assigned to the area. Among the 5,989 applications, only 298 applicants can meet the Chief Minister at the venue. The LDF would take out a protest march on Tuesday demanding the resignation of the CM.
