Varapuzha to have own indoor stadium
Kochi: At a time when sports infrastructure development is getting attention across the district, the long felt need of natives of Varapuzha to have an indoor stadium is finally coming together with local MLA V D Satheesan granting Rs 2.04 crore from his asset development fund to realise the need.
The stadium will come up at an over half acre plot at Varapuzha and will be named after volleyball hero T D Joseph alias Pappan who shone on the international scene. KITCO has prepared the plan and estimate for the project which is being implemented with the guidance of the National Sports Council by the Varapuzha panchayat.
“The momentum for this project came long ago by former MP George Eden who built a gallery at the place using Rs 15 lakh from his MP fund. However, nothing significant happened after that. Now we are lucky to get the required fund for the indoor stadium from V D Satheesan MLA,” said Varapuzha panchayat president Mercy Johny. She said that work on the stadium could be completed using these funds alone.
Speaker G Karthikeyan will lay the foundation stone for the stadium at a function to be held at Varapuzha on Thursday in which Satheesan and other people’s representatives and sportspersons will participate. Work on the stadium is expected to be complete within two years.
