Greyhounds split raises concern
Hyderabad: The Centre’s proposal to separate the control of the Greyhounds training centre and Greyhounds operational hubs has raised eyebrows among top police officials and anti-Naxal experts who feel that it may backfire in tackling the Naxal menace in the state.
In the AP Reorganisation Bill 2013, the Centre has proposed that for three years, the ministry of home affairs will maintain and administer the Greyhounds Regional Training Centre at Premavathipet in Hyderabad. It will be a common training centre for the successor states. After three years it will become the training centre for Telangana.
However, the Greyhounds units will be under the control of the successor state police headed by the respective DGPs. The Bill states that the Centre will fund the anti-Naxal fight by giving financial assistance to new operational hubs of the Greyhounds in the two states.
The move by the Centre to take over the Greyhounds Training Centre in Hyderabad might stir up a controversy. A senior police official said, “The Greyhounds training and operations are interlinked. It is very difficult to segregate these.”
