500 cameras on NH to check violations

The motor vehicles department would set up an additional 500 high resolution cameras.

Kochi: The motor vehicles department would set up an additional 500 high resolution cameras as part of its automated enforcement system on the lines of the Cherthala-Mannuthy stretch of the national highway.

“We’ve already floated tenders for the cameras. They will be placed at vital locations along the national highway other than the safe zone section. Traffic violators will be automatically booked and notice sent to their registration address. The offences include speeding, failure to wear seat belts and violation of lane traffic rules, among others”, a senior official said.

Since the notice generated under the automated system is accompanied by details of camera shots, proof of speed and the place and time of the offence, the violators will have no way other than paying the fine.

“However, repeated offences could attract stricter punishments like suspension of the driving licence. A list of the camera spots is being finalized,” the official said.
