Vedanthangal awaits its regulars

Bird varieties were much lesser this December due to scanty rainfall.

Chennai: Vedanthangal, one of the oldest sanctuaries in south India, has received less than 20,000 birds this season.

The sanctuary, which usually attracts a lot more birds during December every year, has received lesser bird species due to scanty rainfall in Kancheepuram district.

However the serene beauty of the sanctuary has started attracting bird watchers and families. “The spoonbills have started nesting here at Vedanthangal and at least 60 spoonbills can be sighted here,” said Anbu, a bird tracker, adding that pelicans and herons can also be seen nesting.

However, painted storks, and other duck varieties are not found in the sanctuary. “Painted storks, shovellers and pintails are yet to arrive and are expected after a few more spells of rain here,” adds Anbu, noting, “Painted storks are usually the last to arrive and the last species to depart the sanctuary. We expect them by the first week of January as some have started frequenting the place,” he said.

Wildlife officials say that new fingerlings (young ones of fish) will be introduced in the lakes to ensure the birds’ routine feed. “Two or three varieties of fingerlings may be introduced next week.

The lake levels are also periodically monitored while the shortage of water is balanced by drawing water from the nearby lakes in the Chengalpet area,” said a senior wildlife official. Forest officials reviewed the situation at the sanctuary on Sunday and also said night patrols were intensified to curb poaching.
