Over 900 volunteers sign up for tiger census

Over 900 volunteers had applied to participate in the tiger census at Bandipur Tiger Reserve.

Bangalore: Over 900 volunteers had applied to participate in the tiger census at Bandipur Tiger Reserve, which has highest tiger population in the state. The statewide tiger census will kick off across protected areas of Karnataka from Monday.

The forest department had to cut down the applications to 150 and others were asked to participate in wildlife areas other than Bandipur. Director of Bandipur Park, H C Kantaraj said that, besides 150 volunteers, close to 80 members are trained by the department who will be part of census.

Similarly, the tiger reserve at Nagarhole, also received large numbers of applications.?The department, however, has divided the volunteers into two groups so that a greater number of of volunteers will have the chance to participate in the census. Nagarhole Director, R Gokul said that two groups having 300 volunteers will survey the forests for three days each.
