Dogs day out
If you like the idea of spending a breezy Sunday surrounded by wet noses, furry bodies and loud barks, the Pedigree Hycan ‘13 Dog Show at Hitex would have been the perfect place for you. The show had around 300 canine participants. We narrow it down to bring you some of the most popular dogs and of course, the show stealers.
Walking past the stalls, it was impossible to miss 10-month-old Newfoundland Oliver, winner of the Best Breed award. According to Oliver's trainer Sugander, his huge size and furry body make the task of maintaining him quite the challenge. “He requires an air-conditioned environment. Even his food is not easily available in the markets and costs around Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000 per month.”
Then there was Benz and his friend Sweety — miniature Schnauzers, their ‘beards’ and eyebrows being a dead give away. The stall which was the most popular was the one which featured the Japanese breeds — Akita and a Chow-Chow, as well as a French Mastiff.
At the show, three police dogs were awarded the Canine Hero Awards. The first award went to the Labrador, Tony of the Intelligence Security wing of AP Police, who has helped solve theft cases and murders. Next was Jimbo, also from the same wing, who was awarded for recovering explosives. The third dog to win the Canine Hero Award was Spoorthy, a female Labrador who has detected explosives and saved a lot of lives.
