Kolkata: The BJP is optimistic that former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly will accept its offer of a Lok Sabha ticket for the 2014 general elections.
If he does, it will be a slap in the face of the CPI(M) because the sports icon was once very close to the Marxists.
“The BJP is planning to field several celebrity candidates in the state in the coming Lok Sabha elections and Sourav Ganguly is one of them.
Last month, Sourav met BJP general secretary and in charge of Bengal Varun Gandhi in Delhi through a common friend. He [Mr Gandhi] invited Sourav to contest on a BJP ticket,“ state BJP president Rahul Sinha said on Saturday. Mr Ganguly has not yet agreed to the BJP proposal.
