Prisons to have 24X7 control room
Kottayam: Home minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan said on Saturday that the home department will implement a slew of reforms ranging from setting up of round- the-clock control rooms as well as monitoring the prisoners and the jail employees.
The government was strengthening the jail security and discipline in view of the incidents in the Kozhikode jail, he said at a press conference.
“Prohibition of intoxicating substances and mobile phones in jails will be strictly implemented. Prisoners who want to contact their relatives can use the coin booth in jails for the purpose,” he added.
The discipline of the jail officials will be closely observed and they will be given a special training for the working of the CCTVs. Photo-stapled identity cards should be produced while meeting relatives in the jails. “Those without identity cards can see their relatives after being interviewed by the jail superintendent,” he said.
Political parties should refrain from conducting strikes which obstruct the freedom of movement of the people in the context of the public outrage following the protest of Sandhya in Thiruvananthapuram against those who blocked the way to her house, Radhakrishnan said.
