Cancer centre work to be speeded up
Kochi: A meeting of peoples representatives from Ernakulam convened by Kochi Mayor Tony Chammany on Saturday decided to accelerate the pace for setting up the cancer research centre cum hospital on Kalamassery medical college campus and make it an international one with the co-operation of Central and state governments.
The meeting, attended by Justice V R Krishna Iyer, Prof M K Sanu, GCDA chairman N Venugopal and former district collector K R Viswambharan, felt that a concrete shape to the proposal cleared by the state government could be given in the meeting called by CM on December 27.
Union Minister for Food and Ernakulam MP Prof K V Thomas said that the cancer centre was coming to fruition just the way the Cochin international airport and Kochi Metro Rail were realised. He said that Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad had promised every support to the cancer centre.
State Ministers V K Ibrahim Kunju, K Babu, MPs K P Dhanapalan and Charles Dais, MLAs Hibi Eden, Benny Behnan, Anwar Sadath, Dominic Presentation and S Sarma and Kochi Corporation councilors and chiefs of some civic bodies also spoke on the occasion.
