312 new projects to boost Tamil Nadu
Chennai: Chief minister J. Jayalalithaa on Friday announced 312 new projects, including several for building infrastructure across the state and welfare schemes for the police.
She was addressing the concluding session of the three-day conference of collectors and police officers. Earlier during the day, she commended the police for maintaining law and order , but advised it to file chargesheets faster to ensure that trials were not delayed.
Referring to the many deaths in police custody, Jayalalithaa said it was a “travesty of justice” for a citizen to die within the precincts of a police station.
Of the 346 announcements made by the chief minister at the conference last year, government orders were issued for 332 and in 2011 all 81announcements made were executed.

Chennai: Chief minister Jayalalithaa on Friday announced that family members of victims of hit-and-run cases would be granted a solatium of Rs 2 lakh while those suffering grievous injuries would receive Rs 1 lakh.
The chief minister announced 312 new initiatives following deliberations with collectors and senior police officials at the conclusion of the three-day conference with them.
The CM also announced free annual master health check ups at government hospitals for police personnel over the age of 40 as they worked odd hours and had to have irregular food habits. It was a scheme that would benefit the older age group of policeman, she pointed out.
Addressing the problem of water shortage in the dry districts, Jayalalithaa said that 44 reverse osmosis units would be put up in Nagapattinam. A total of 1200 drinking water ooranies would be renovated in Ramanathapuram district and an investigation would also be taken up for coastal erosion control in Kancheepuram district.
In view of the rise in cyber crimes with increasing technological advances, Jayalalithaa also announced that the Cyber Crime Unit with the CB-CID police would be strengthened with the necessary hardware and software. Deputy commissioners of police in cities other than Chennai would be given magisterial powers under Sections 107, 108 and 110 of Cr. PC. as in the case of Chennai city police.
The chief minister also announced an increase in feeding charges for the inmates of orphanages from Rs 450 to Rs 750. Commending the hard work and careful thought that had gone into these proposals, the chief minister said, “They display commitment to the amelioration of the hardships faced by the people.”
Several new roads and bus terminals have been announced, including a modern integrated bus stand at Tiruvallur and a central bus stand for Tiruvannamalai. Pointing out that resources at the disposal of the State government were limited, the CM said that the officers would have to ensure that the funds sanctioned were utilised effectively.
A few requests made by participants at the conference demanding detailed study had been held back including an amendment to Section 167 of the Cr. PC. and certain sections of the Explosives Rules.
