Chennai: Chief minister J. Jayala­lithaa on Friday annou­nced 312 new projects, including several for building infrastructure across the state and welfare schemes for the police.

She was addressing the concluding session of the three-day conference of collectors and police officers. Earlier during the day, she commended the police for maintaining law and order , but advised it to file chargesheets faster to ensure that trials were not delayed.

Referring to the many deaths in police custody, Jayalalithaa said it was a “travesty of justice” for a citizen to die within the precincts of a police station.

Of the 346 announcements made by the chief minister at the conference last year, government orders were issued for 332 and in 2011 all 81announcements made were executed.

Chennai: Chief minister Jayala­lithaa on Friday anno­unced that family mem­be­rs of victims of hit-and-run cases would be granted a solatium of Rs 2 lakh while those sufferi­ng grievous injuries wo­uld receive Rs 1 lakh.

The chief minister an­n­ounced 312 new initiatives following deliberations with collectors and senior police officials at the conclusion of the th­ree-day conference with them.

The CM also anno­unced free annual master health check ups at government hospitals for police personnel over the age of 40 as they worked odd hours and had to ha­ve irregular food habits. It was a scheme that would benefit the older age group of policeman, she pointed out.

Addressing the problem of water shortage in the dry districts, Jay­a­lalithaa said that 44 rev­erse osmosis units would be put up in Naga­pa­ttinam. A total of 1200 drinking water ooranies would be renovated in Ra­m­anathapuram district and an investigation would also be taken up for coastal erosion control in Kancheep­ur­am district.

In view of the rise in cyber crimes with incre­asing technological adv­ances, Jayalalithaa also announced that the Cy­ber Crime Unit with the CB-CID police would be strengthened with the necessary hardware and software. Deputy commissioners of police in cities other than Che­nnai would be given ma­g­i­sterial powers under Sections 107, 108 and 110 of Cr. PC. as in the case of Chennai city police.

The chief minister also announced an increase in feeding charges for the inmates of orph­a­nag­es from Rs 450 to Rs 750. Commending the hard work and careful tho­u­ght that had gone into th­e­­se proposals, the chief minister said, “They dis­pl­ay commitment to the amelioration of the har­dships faced by the people.”

Several new roads and bus terminals have been announced, including a modern integrated bus stand at Tiruvallur and a central bus stand for Tiruvannamalai. Poi­nt­ing out that resources at the disposal of the State government were limited, the CM said that the offi­cers would have to ensure that the funds sanctioned were utilised effectively.

A few requests made by participants at the conference demanding det­ai­led study had been he­ld back including an amendment to Section 167 of the Cr. PC. and certain sections of the Ex­plosives Rules.
