Secure numbers in force from January
Vehicle owners to get three months change replace number plates.
Vijayawada: The much-talked about High Security Registration Number Plates will be mandatory in the district from coming January. The introduction of the HSRNP is designed to put an end to unauthorised, unclear and fake registration number plates.
Owners of as many as 2.3 lakh motor vehicles in the city must get the existing number plates replaced with standardised, tamper-proof HSRN plates provided by the Road Transport Authority,?while all new vehicles would have to get the HSRN plates right from the date the rule is implemented.
Owners of existing vehicles will have three months, from the date announced by the RTA, to get the nu-mber plates replaced. Each HSRN plate would cost around Rs 350 or more, depending on the type of the vehicle.
The HSRNP has a combination of patented chromium hologram; laser number containing the alphanumeric identification of the testing agency and manufacturer and a reflective film bearing a verification lettering IND.
Once the rule is imposed, vehicle owners will have to buy the number plates only from the RTA authorised centres. Number plates manufactured by unauthorised plate makers would be treated as a forgery.
Each HSRNP will have a hidden code imprinted on the plate and details of the vehicle, including its owner’s name and address, which will be revealed when it is scanned.
“Cracking crimes like chain snatching, vehicle lifting etc will be easier now. In fact, such crimes will come down after implementation of this rule,” said a traffic inspector.
A counter would be set up at RTA offices in the district where motorists can order the plates, according to officials. Out of 2,32,340 motor vehicles in the city, there are as many as 31,017 cars, 1,35,276 motorcycles, 29,325 lorries, 9,000 auto rickshaws and 1,600 school buses.
