No takers for 1000 BBMP projects

While work on most projects in the city hobbles along, the BBMP has come up with the idea.

Bangalore: While work on most projects in the city hobbles along, the BBMP has come up with the idea of a single window system to clear projects worth Rs 494 crore to expedite the pace of infrastructure work.

The initiative received a lukewarm response from contractors, who have come forward to execute only 1,357 of the 2,787 projects planned.

Chairmam, BBMP standing committee on ward level works, A. H. Basavaraj, announced in October that projects would be approved through the single window system in all 198 wards of the city to avoid files being held up as they made the rounds of various departments for approval A slew of projects worth Rs. 494 crore were announced for 2013-14 and tenders floated for 2,787 of them.

Some of the more urgent projects like pothole filling, providing water connections and building school and hospitals were given to the Karnataka Rural Infrastructure Development Limited (KRIDL) without floating of tenders, to excute.

While contractors have come forward to carry out only about 55 per cent of the work announced, they have quoted rates about 10 per cent below the schedule prescribed, pleasing the civic agency. “ This will help the BBMP save money, “ says Basavaraj.

Fresh tenders have now been floated for the remaining 1,359 projects. With tender documents set to be opened on December 28, BBMP expects new bidders to participate in the hassle- free single window system.
