Power cut off to 240 mobile phone towers
Hyderabad: In a joint operation, officials of the GHMC and the Central Discom on Thursday disconnected the electricity supply to 240 cellphone towers of various cellular companies at various places in the city.
GHMC commissioner Somesh Kumar said the disconnection drive would be continued and that the towers would also be dismantled if the cellular firms failed to get the towers regularised by paying Rs 1 lakh fee to the GHMC. There are over 6,000 cellphone towers that have been installed on roof-tops of various buildings in the city.
GHMC additional commissioner Ronald Rose said almost all of these towers are unauthorised.
“The state government has issued GO 380 stating that cellphone companies should apply to the GHMC and get the existing towers regularised. The GHMC will regularise the towers only if the companies pay Rs 1 lakh fee and submit structural stability certificate of the building on which the tower is located,” he said. He added that despite several notices, cellphone companies had failed to pay the regularisation fee.
The representatives from the cellular firms met Somesh Kumar and told him that they will consult all their counterparts and come to the GHMC in a day or two with their response.
