Inner ring road work likely to be delayed
Vijayawada: The completion of inner ring road may be further delayed due to the collapse of Gunadala flyover girder.
The inner ring road works are scheduled to be completed by March 2014. In addition, the flyover issue turned into a political blame game.
The VGTM urban development authority officials promised to complete the inner ring road by March 2014. But it is alleged the officials fail to check the quality of the construction of flyover.
The inner ring road works were launched in 2008 at an initial estimation of Rs 74 crore to divert the traffic coming from Hyderabad to the National Highway No. 5 leading to Kolkota at Ramavarappadu ring road.
With the abnormal delay the cost of the inner ring road increased to Rs 119 crore and the contractors are yet to complete the flyover on Budameru and canals near Ramavarappadu ring road.
Once the IRR is completed people will heave a sigh of relief as the heavy vehicles which are plying through the heart of the city on BRTS road at present would be diverted to the IRR.
Vijayawada central MLA Malladi Vishnu said that he would complain about the issue to the minister for municipal administration and an inquiry would be conducted to find out the quality of the flyover.
It is said that the vigilance officials warned the contractors earlier against inferior quality of material but they failed to rectify the lapses in the construction.
The CPM leaders also staged a dharna at VGTM urban development authority office demanding an inquiry into the collapse of the girder of the flyover. The Telugu Desam leaders complained that the officials and ruling party leaders failed to supervise the quality of construction.
Uda vice-chairman M. Rama Rao said that a departmental inquiry and a third party inquiry by an expert agency would be conducted and action would be taken on the erring persons.
He said the of the 10-km stretch of inner ring road at a stretch of 8.6 km was completed.
