Ensure women’s safety, Governor tells police
'www.safeindiaforwomen.org' for sexual assault victims and to require help from police.

Bangalore: “The public is not going to stay silent any longer; they want immediate reactions from officials when atrocities are committed against women. It is entirely the responsibility of the police to ensure women’s safety, but the need of the hour is a draconian law which mitigates severe punishments to such offenders,” said Governor H.R. Bhardwaj.
At a national conference on women’s safety and security, organised by the Karnataka State Police and the Department of Women and Child Development on Thursday, the governor highlighted the number of successful arrests made by the police following the introduction of the Anti-Dowry law 30 years ago, and insisted that a similar ‘special law’ had to be drafted to contain the increasing
number of atrocities against women.
“A special court should be set up to try offenders of sexual assault, and a quick trial should take place within 2-3 days to ensure maximum prosecution,” Bhardwaj said.
The governor also inaugurated a web portal called www.safeindiaforwomen.org for women who are victims of sexual assault and require help from the police, government agencies, and NGOs.
Also present at the seminar were home minister K.J. George, city police commissioner Raghavendra H. Auradkar, minister for women and child welfare Umashri, former chief justice M.N. Venkatachalaiah, and senior advocate for women’s rights Pramila Nesargi.
