Bangalore M. Tech student commits a ‘selfie’ suicide

In a bizarre instance of ‘selfie’ obsession, a 26-year-old man tried to videograph his own suicide.

Bangalore: Depressed over poor academic performance, a 26-year-old M.Tech student allegedly committed suicide by hanging and even attempted to video record it on his mobile phone at his residence in Girinagar police limits on Wednesday.

The deceased has been identified as Harish D, a resident of Veerabhadranagar and a native of Shimoga.

He was the youngest of three siblings, and was unmarried. Police said Harish, who was studying at PESIT, shared a room in a paying guest accommodation with his friend, Chetan. However, he was allegedly upset about having failed in a few subjects in his first and second year of M.Tech. Police said that Harish hadn’t fully cleared his B.E exams either.

Around 4pm on Wednesday, Harish locked himself in his room and then went to the restroom. He switched on the video of his camera phone, placed it on the window ledge and stood on a bucket. He reportedly tied a nylon rope to a hook embedded in the ceiling and hanged himself.

The incident came to light at around 9.45pm, when Chetan returned home. When his repeated knocks on the front door evoked no response, Chetan peeped through the bathroom window only to find Harish’s body hanging.

He informed the police who rushed to the spot. They recovered Harish’s mobile phone but found that since the video had low memory it had stopped recording right after Harish stepped on to the bucket to tie the noose.

Police also found a suicide note in which the deceased held himself responsible for his death.

He also mentioned that his friends tried helping him on various occasions, but he was unable to cope with the pressure.

The police contacted Harish’s parents in Shimoga, who came and received the body following post-mortem. A case of unnatural death has been
registered.
