Outsiders can now study in Self Financing colleges

KSFECMA and govt decide to allow the admission of students from other states to Kerala colleges.

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Self-Financing Engineering College Managements Association (KSFECMA) and the state government took an in-principle decision on Wednesday to allow the admission of students from other states also in engineering colleges in the state.

Till this academic year, only students of Kerala origin were admitted to engineering colleges in the state. KSFECMA general secretary T.A. Vijayan told Deccan Chronicle that as per the decision, the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE) will conduct entrance examinations in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar also.

Another decision was to ensure that the three allotments for admissions to government quota seats are completed before July 21.
The fee for government quota seats will be increased from Rs 40,000 to Rs 42,000, Vijayan said.

The decision to admit other state students in engineering colleges was taken as over 25,000 seats remained vacant this academic year.

The total number of vacant seats in the last academic year was 15,000. The large number of vacant seats was reported in colleges with low pass percentage.

There are even batches with less than five students in some self-financing engineering colleges.

The government has decided to approve admissions only to self-financing engineering colleges having minimum pass percentage of 25 percent, 30 percent and 35 percent respectively for fourth, sixth and eighth semester from 2015-16 academic year.
