Officials demolish huts on state land

Police and revenue officials demolishes all the huts that has been erected on a 35 acre plot of land.
Vijayawada: Tension prevailed at Mallelapadmanabha Rao Nagar of Ibrahimpatnam mandal early on Wednesday morning as police and revenue officials used four poclains to and demolished all the huts that had been erected on a 35 acre plot of land.
The early morning action by the officials forced over 1,500 people, living on the land that had been donated to the government years ago, being left homeless.
It was early in the morning that the revenue officials, along with a large contingent of police personnel, descended on the spot and pressed the earthmovers into service. The residents alleged that the officials demolished their huts without giving them prior intimation or even allowing them to retrieve their belongings from their huts.
A scuffle soon followed the protests by the residents and the police arrested about 50 of the men who were protesting.
Later, CPI activists staged protests at I-Town police station, demanding their release.
CPI city secretary D. Shankar condemned the police and revenue officials for arresting the residents, along with party leader T. Tatayya who tried to stop the demolition.
Shankar said that though the court had ordered officials to allot the land to the poor and give them the title deeds, the officials were least bothered about it and had forcibly occupied the land.
Vijayawada sub-collector D. Hari Chandana and joint-collector P. Usha Kumari visited the spot.
