Kalyanpur shock for seeded Rawat

Bangalore: Wild card Adil Kalyanpur of Karnataka pulled off the first upset of the tournament, beating seventh seed Mayukh Rawat 6-2, 6-1 to enter the last 16 of the R.T. Narayan Memorial Cup AITA National Series Under-16 junior tennis tournament.

At the KSLTA courts here on Tuesday, Kalyanpur playing an attacking game, never allowed his rival to settle down and coasted to a facile victory. Top seed B.R. Nikshep of Karnataka also made it to the pre quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-3 win over the big serving B. Anirudh.

Sanil Jagitiani of West Bengal defeated the local lad Rahul Shankar 6-3, 6-1.

In the girls section at the Mahila Seva Samaj courts, top seed Snehal Mane of Maharashtra dispatched Shivani Manjanna of Karnataka 6-3, 6-3 to enter the last 16 round.

Shabbir off to flying start

Bangalore: Former national champion Shabbir Dhankot of Tamil Nadu got off to a rollicking start at the 25th National Tenpin Bowling Championship.

At Blu O here on Tuesday, Shabbir finished the day with total pinfall of 1347 at an impressive average of 224.50. His tally was at the end of 1st block of six games in round 1, played on Long Oil condition.

Shabbir started with 202 in the first game and followed it up with high scores of 275, 246, 225 in Games 2, 3 and 4 respectively. He scored a poor 146 in Game 5 but recovered well to end the day with another high score of 253 in Game 6. Defending champion Dhruv Sarda of Delhi was placed second with a total pinfall of 1231 and average of 205.17.

Local hope Huned Khokhar was one spot behind with a total pinfall of 1185 and average of 197.5. Trying to catch up with the leaders was another home boy and National elite squad bowler Aakash Ashok Kumar of Karnataka, who was positioned fourth with a total pinfall of 1180 and average of 196.67.

?The Team Golf League finale will descend on the city on Thursday after meandering through different parts of the country . The final will be played over two days with the 12 finalists battling it out at the Karnataka Golf Association.

The competition, which is in its fourth year, has been tough and exciting with the teams clinching victory by a margin of a solitary point in most cases.

Defending champion, The Bandits from Hyderabad and runners-up, the Avengers from Kolkata have not had it easy, fighting it out to clinch a spot in the last twelve.

The 12 finalists include SHM (Bengaluru), Bangalore Eagles (Bengaluru), Ahmedabad Tigers (Ahmedabad), The Bandits (Hyderabad), Champion Hookers (Chandigarh), Ravi's Ruffians (Gurgaon), Seasoned Pros (Noida), Tiger Tamerz (Chennai), Bull and Bears (Coimbatore), Back 9 Bandits (Mumbai), Pune Titans (Pune) and Avengers (Kolkata).

The team captains, or the 'War Lords' will have to choose the best eight from their team for the stroke-play round which will be played on Wednesday. The top-eight teams from the stroke play round will then slug it out in the match-play round on Thursday for the crown.

Karnataka lads were staring down the barrel on the third day of the four-day U-19 Cooch Behar Trophy against Rajasthan at the M.

Chinnaswamy stadium on Tuesday. Resuming at 95 for four, the hosts were skittled for 149 with Nathu Singh (4 34) and Chundawat CK (3 34) doing the damage.

In arrears by 351, Karnataka, asked to follow-on, slipped to 155 for 6 in their second essay with opener Abhishek P (50) once again putting up a resistance as left-arm spin ner Shubham Sharma bagged 4-38. Karnataka now trail by 196 runs with only four wickets in hand.
