Ghoulish! Post-mortems in open air
Coimbatore: In a spine-chilling practice, post-mortems are being done in the open outside the mortuary at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. The dead are given no dignity as the bodies are all being callously cut and smashed with crude knives and hammers in the open backyard of the dilapidated mortuary in public view.
As the roofs of the 60-year-old morgue are almost collapsing, the hospital staffers are forced to conduct the autopsies in public view. “We are doing the autopsy in the backyard because there is no facility inside the morgue. The building is in such a bad condition we are scared to use the hammers and sickles for the post-mortem inside the mortuary,” admitted a mortuary staff.
Deccan Chronicle has captured the shocking pictures of bodies being dragged to the bushy backyard and the autopsy being done in the open. People visiting the eateries and commercial complexes that are located next to the government hospital morgue, see the gory sight of human bodies being mauled every day.
“The customers to our mansion get to see the bodies being sliced and hammered every day. They don’t come back to our mansion again,” complains Sujith, owner of New Lanka Lodge. Through the windows of the first floor of the lodge, the customers get to see the blow by blow scenes of the post-mortem.
“So, we never keep the windows open,” says Sujith. The occupants of the other neighbouring lodges and commercial complexes too are able to witness the autopsy.
