Abhilash, Stephy named the best

Abhilash T.S and Stephy Nixon were rewarded for their splendid performance in the Championship Stephy also played a vital role in India's campaign at the 25th FIBA Asia championship

Abhilash T.S. and Stephy Nixon won the P.S. Viswappan Memorial Gold medals for best players of the state senior basketball, adding icing on the cake for champions Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram.

For the last six years Abhilash has been a regular in the state team and his rebounds and quick acceleration were a standout in Ernakulam's triumph.

After graduating from Sree Kerala Varma College, the Kunnamkulam native joined Customs and Central Excise and has since been a powerhouse in the department team's performance and likewise for Ernakulam district.

Stephy was in sublime form throughout the championship and played a vital role in India's campaign at the recently concluded 25th FIBA Asia championship in Bangkok.

The lanky girl might not be as prolific as Geethu Anna Jose, but is a physical presence when it comes to earning defensive rebounds and also has a sharp eye for the basket.

The representative of KSEB from Koratty was undoubtedly the right choice for the best women player award that was bestowed upon her.

Meanwhile, the Parameswaran Pillai award for promising players of the championship was given to Albin Baby and Surya P.R. Albin had shown promise from his school days with St. Ephremes Mannanam and later during his stint with Mar Ivanios College Thiruvananthapuram. Surya, who represents the Kerala Police, is from Kannur.

Former secretary of the state association, V.C. Hashim was honoured with the P.C. Thomas lifetime achievement award.
