Cops focus on New Year parties
Hyderabad: Special anti-drug units have been formed in the state police department to tackle the menace of narcotic smugglers, especially in view of the upcoming New Year’s Eve celebrations.
The police will be keeping a tab on New Year parties as it is being suspected that drugs are being brought into the city from Mumbai and Goa on a large scale.
Apart from the Hyderabad and Cyberabad police commissionerate teams, sources said that the CID has also been roped in for this. The director-general of police, B. Prasada Rao, said, “Special units are being formed to deal with drug peddling.
CID is looking into the issue of busting drug rackets and human trafficking rings. Cops of both commissionerates will stipulate timings for pubs and regulate them. If drugs are circulated in pubs, we will take stern action. They will have to take permission for New Year celebrations.”
Police is also keeping a close watch on known drug peddlers in the city. Police sources said that the involvement of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim is being suspected in a recent case when a six-member drug right was busted on November 28.
A Special Operation Team of the Cyberabad police had seized Methamphetamine worth '2.15 crore. The accused were found to be smuggling drugs to Singapore and Dubai via Chennai.
On October 22, the city police arrested a Nigerian and two others. Central Zone Task Force sleuths had arrested the accused for distributing party pills and cocaine. The Nigerian was operating from Bangalore.
The Cyberabad police also arrested three persons and seized 56 kg of Ephedrine worth '2 crore at Chandanagar.
An Cyberabad police official said, “The flow of all types of drugs into the city has increased. On New Year’s Eve we will have more trouble.”
