Chennai: Demonstrating the perils of footboard travel yet again, a 16-year-old boy on his way to school was killed as he jumped off the footboard of an MTC bus while it was still in motion and came under its rear wheels near Perambur at around 9. 15 am Monday.

K Karthick , class XI student , lost his balance as he jumped and fell on the road right in the path of the bus, only a few metres away from the school bus stop, according to the police.

“Had the boy waited for a few more seconds, he would have reached the bus stop,” said assistant commissioner (traffic investigation wing), Anna Nagar, Thambu Samy. Karthick was rushed to a hospital by people standing at a nearby ration shop, but was declared brought dead.

“The boy had no external bleeding and so we thought he could be saved,” said one of the people who came to his aid. The boy ‘s body was later shifted from the multi-specialty hospital he was taken to by the bystanders, to the Government Stanley Hospital for an autopsy.

Karthick who lived in Dr Ambedkar Nagar in Manali had lost his father, Kumar a few years ago and his mother, Geetha, supported both him and his brother, working as a maid in the neighbourhood, the police said.

The Anna Nagar Traffic Investigation police have booked the driver of bus, E. Karnan (31) and bus conductor S. Sigamani (51) for causing death due to negligence and are
investigating.
