Cops ill-equipped for crackdown

Proposal to procure PDA?devices remains on paper.

Visakhapatnam: While the traffic police in Hyderabad and other major cities in the country are being empowered with technology and using Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) device, to fish out traffic challans, including e-challan, the city traffic police is still ill-equipped and the proposal to use PDA devices inVizag, has been caught in red-tape.

With cops having no proper mechanism to crack the whip on motorists, those evading payment of traffic e-challans, a good amount is yet to be realised in over 30,000 cases under the police commissionerate. The traffic police officials proposed to procure PDA devises to use those in the city, but, their proposal remained in paper only.

Police sources said that they find it difficult to fish out traffic challans and to check stolen vehicles manually, in the city, and hence must require new gadgets like PDA devices. They also told that if they use PDA devices, payment of traffic fines will be easier and they will accept debit or credit card payment. Motorists can swipe their cards on the machine at the spot itself.

Additional DCP (traffic), V. Suresh Babu, told that like Hyderabad cops they wanted to go hi-tech and a proposal has been sent to the DGP office for acquiring PDA devices, but so far there has been no communication from Hyderabad in this regard.

“Once we get the PDAs traffic police at various junctions in the city to randomly enter the vehicle numbers on the PDA, the system automatically crosschecks the numbers with the database of the unpaid traffic e-challans and the missing vehicles. That gadget is expected only after March 2014" said Suresh Babu.
