‘Versatility is key for any artist’, says Tulsi Kumar

Tulsi Kumar, daughter of the late Gulshan Kumar, is a successful singer in her own right today. She lent her voice to two songs in this year’s blockbuster 'Aashiqui 2' — 'Hum Mar Jayenge' and 'Piya Aaye Na'. As the songs continue to be a rage months after the film has released, Tulsi is of course pleased with the reactions she has received. She says, “'Aashiqui 2' has been a blessed project. I am extremely overwhelmed with the kind of response I got for my songs; the compliments have not stopped pouring in. Recently, I met Suresh Wadekarji (I started training in his academy at the age of 6) on a flight and he appreciated my songs in 'Aashiqui 2'. This meant a lot to me, coming from a legendary person like him.”

Ask her to choose a favourite from her own songs, and Tulsi says, “Honestly, I am too critical about my work. But if I have to pick a track it would be 'Aaja Maahi' (from my album 'Love Ho Jaaye') composed by Neeraj Sridhar of 'Bombay Vikings'. It did not become too popular but is very close to my heart.”

Speaking of her upcoming songs, Tulsi says, “I have 'Mujhe Ishq Se' from the film 'Yaariyan' composed by Mithoon. Other upcoming films include 'Sonali Cable' and 'Kuku Mathur Ki Jhand Ho Gayi'.” Although she has mostly sung romantic ballads, the singer is open to experimenting. “Soft romantic numbers are my comfort zone but I would surely like to step out of it and try something peppy like a dance number. I believe versatility is key for any artist,” says Tulsi.
