Saleem tops for Karnataka

Bengaluru: With over 1700 athletes from the country coming under one roof and competing in the National junior athletics championships, the past four days has been nothing short of a carnival.

As the sun set over the Sree Kanteerava Stadium on Saturday, Kerala athletes had the biggest smiles on their face retaining the overall championship crown, for an amazing 17th triumph in 18 years on the final day of the five-day meet.

Kerala finished with 585 points with their closest rival Tamil Nadu a distant second in 362 points.

Karnataka, who were way behind the champs in the medal tally, finishing fifth with 182.5 points, did have their moment of glory.

Home boy Saleem Sheikh battled fatigue and fever to claim the 200M gold in 22.2 seconds in the U-20 category.

While Saleem always believed that he had what it takes to beat the best, the PUC student (commerce) from Kengeri whose best is 21.9 seconds, felt he could have done better.

Meanwhile Vijayakumari.G.K added a silver to her second day’s gold in the 200M clocking 25.66 in the U-18 event behind Shaharbana Sidhique of Kerala.

The Karnataka girls U-20 relay then boosted the tally taking the silver behind Kerala. Sriom Patel (U-20, 10000M), Mahender Singh (U20, 3000M steeplech) and Namitha G.K (U-18 Shotput), rounded the medal tally for the hosts with silver on the final day.

Meanwhile, Sumit Malik of Himachal Pradesh and S. Archana were adjudged the best athlete in U-20 boys and girls’ respectively.

As many before them, the youngsters also pushed the boundaries as some attempted and few conquered the national and meet records.

Kerela’s Jessy Joseph who already holds the national record of 2:08:67 in the U-18 800M sprint, bettered her own mark by two milliseconds while Chandan Bauri of West Bengal broke the national record in 200M (U-16), clocking 22.11 seconds.

Swapna Barman, who had set a new mark in high jump two days ago, erased the national record of 4983 points held by Pooja in U-18 heptathlon, racking up a point tally of 4992, also her personal best, to write her name in the record books.

S. Mohd. Zuber (TN), Parul (UP) also set new meet records in U-18 triple jump and U-20 2000M steeplechase respectively.
