Hyderabad: The United States Navy Joint Typhoon Warning Centre (JTWC) has classified Cyclone Madi as a tropical cyclone on Friday itself. Cyclone Madi, a name given by Maldives, is currently stationary in the southwest of Bay of Bengal, about 520 km southeast of Chennai. The IMD said Cyclone Madi would move northwards slowly over the next 48 hours with maximum sustained surface wind speeds of up to 145 kmph.
Dr G. Sudhakar Rao, director, IMD Hyderabad, said, "It is not expected to make landfall anywhere on the Indian coast and will remain over water and then fizzle out." The JTWC predicted that Cyclone Madi will be far away from the shore when it reaches its maximum strength sometime on Monday.
However, parts of the state will experience rainfall with the IMD predicting showers over south coastal Andhra Pradesh, coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry over the next 48 hours.
Fishermen have been warned to remain cautious while venturing into sea. It has been a year of cyclones with Madi being the fifth in the Bay of Bengal this year and the fourth in less than two months.
