BJP, TMC will pick up Ganguly issue in House
New Delhi: The Opposition BJP and Trinamul will raise the issue of Justice A.K. Ganguly continuing as chairman of West Bengal Human Rights Commission in the Parliament.
Justice Ganguly has been indicted by a Supreme Court constituted panel for sexually harassing a law intern. But, the apex court has said as per administrative powers vested with it, it can not take action against a retired judge.
“Someone who has violated human rights can not continue as chairman of Human Rights Commission. We will raise this matter in Parliament,” leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj tweeted on Saturday.
Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitely too had made similar demand.
Trinamul also stated that the party would raise the issue of Justice Ganguly in the Parliament.
“We will raise the issue and give notice under Rule 193 for a discussion in respect of the conduct of Justice Ganguly. We are seeking his resignation from the post of the chairman of the West Bengal Human Rights Commission,” said Mr Kalyan Banerjee, chief whip of the Trinamul in the Lok Sabha.
Earlier on Saturday, a Kolkata-based NGO wrote to Delhi police chief B.S. Bassi requesting him to register an FIR against Justice Ganguly.
It also wrote to Delhi’s Parliament Street police station under the jurisdiction of which Le Meridien hotel falls, where the incident allegedly took place on December 24, 2012.
