Aynavaram hawkers to move into complex
City civic body plans to move the hawkers into the corporation’s commercial complex.
Chennai: Motorists crossing the Aynavaram market can now heave a sigh of relief with the civic body planning to move the hawkers in the market into the corporation’s commercial complex in a week's time.
The two storeyed complex was constructed seven years back and lying vacant even though painting, electronic and minor renovation works were carried out often.
“We are expected to move inside the complex soon and we are awaiting the move. There are 372 shops here, of which 160 are interior shops (those which do not encroach upon the roads and have a separate place to set up their stalls),” said Gani Bai, a butcher.
“Once all of us go inside, the existing place will be demolished by corporation to construct a new complex,” he added.
But some hawkers inside the existing building have a different opinion. “It is roadside vendors who block the road and it is they who have to be moved inside the new complex,” said a vegetable shop owner on condition of anonymity.
“My shop has shutters and is spacious — which the new complex lacks. The Chennai corporation need not demolish the place that we are now in as it is a safe place for us,” he added.
“There is traffic jam all the way and I know that our shops are the reason behind it. We are ready to move in as soon as the corporation opens the complex,” said Kannan, a roadside vendor.
A corporation field official said around 153 stalls are ready to be occupied inside the complex, which is expected to be opened by next week. “Discussions are going on with the hawkers and the complex will be opened in a week,” he said.
