Exercise, meditation help with persistent back pain
A leading spine surgeon suggests exercise and meditation to cope with back pain.
New Delhi, Dec 8: Citing the worrisome trend of more and more people suffering from back pain, a leading spine surgeon said erratic lifestyle is the major cause behind chronic back ache among urban population and suggested exercise and meditation to cope with the problem.
"Competitive environment, sedantary lifestyle and lack of exercise are a major cause being chronic back ache and cervical problems among the urban population," Shanker Acharya, spine surgeon at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, said.
He was addressing a group of people during a health awareness event organised by Kadambini Charitable Trust who had come to register themselves for the Delhi Half Marathon to be held on December 15.
Speaking about the causes that lead to spine-related problems, the surgeon said cumulative effect of improper sitting posture, accidents or any physical injury causes great damage to spine which is worse than head injury.
Also, he said often the food one eats leads to infection-borne disease like tuberculosis, which may lead to spinal problems and "we tend to ignore it till the the time our upper torso become unmovable".
"Persistent pain and stiffness in the back or shoulders should be consulted with doctors at the earliest," he said, adding that with latest technological advancements, surgeries have become easy and people should not be afraid to seek medical aid.
People from various walks of life including a TV presenter, a golfer, 20-year-old student, and housewives who themselves have been suffering from spinal problem and underwent surgical operations were also present during the event and shared their stories.
