LDF to tone down Cliff House siege

140-day stir to end before 1 p.m. every day.

Thiruvananthapuram: The LDF has decided to trim down its indefinite siege of Cliff House from December 9 demanding the resignation of chief minister Oommen Chandy in the solar case to a token protest till 1 p.m. every day.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the LDF on Friday. “It will be a symbolic agitation. We don’t intend to choke the chief minister. The agitation will end before 1 p.m. daily,’’ said CPM district secretary Kadakampally Surendran at a press conference.

He said the workers will take out a march towards the Cliff House but will stop wherever the police intercept them. LDF activists from each Assembly constituency will arrive in batches to take part in the siege and the agitation will continue for 140 days, he added.

Opposition Leader V.S. Achuthanandan will inaugurate the siege on Monday. The decision to tone down the agitation comes close on the heels of the State Human Rights Commission direction to withdraw the siege as it would create huge inconvenience to the chief minister, nine other ministers living in Cliff House compound, besides the local residents of the area.

LDF sources said the siege would be disciplined. Unlike the secretariat siege in which thousands of workers drawn from various parts of the state had created some anxious moments for the party leadership, this time only a limited number of activists would take part in the agitation.
