Black Day: Six injured in stone pelting

The ‘Black Day’, which was held in protest of the Babri Masjid demolition, was observed peacefully in the city on Friday.

Hyderabad: The ‘Black Day’, which was held in protest of the Babri Masjid demolition, was observed peacefully in the city on Friday except for one untoward incident in Moghalpura wherein about six persons, including police personnel, were injured in stone pelting.

In the afternoon, some youngsters who were returning after offering namaaz in a mosque in Moghalpura, raised slogans and protested.

“The youngsters also started to pelt stones at the police deployed near the fire station. They were dispersed immediately. However, due to the stone pelting, three of our men and three civilians sustained minor injuries.” said S. Gangadhar, assistant commissioner of police, Mirchowk division.

The injured were treated at various hospitals. “As of now, no cases have been registered and none of them were taken into custody, but for sure cases will be registered.” the ACP added.

Meanwhile, the situation near the historic Macca Masjid remained peaceful. “There were no untoward incidents at Macca Masjid or in the division. All the prayers were conducted peacefully and the situation was totally under control,” confirmed M. Ram Mohan Rao, assistant commissioner of police, Charminar division.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Ghouse, corporator, Shalibanda lodged a complaint with the Moghalpura police alleging that some unidentified persons pretending to be from the Muslim community had pelted stones. Two persons who were injured in the pelting approached the cops and lodged a complaint.

The victims, Venkatesh, a railway employee and Uday Kumar, a private employee, complained that they were attacked by a mob while walking on the road. Prohibitory orders were issued and security was beefed up in the city.

Scores of security personnel, including paramilitary forces, were deployed at various sensitive places and mosques in the city. Picketing was done and dog and bomb squads were also pressed into action.

The city police commissioner, addressing the media at the end of the day, thanked the citizens for remaining calm.
